Destination of the Month: Abu Dhabi

Date Posted: 13/01/2020

Sitting proudly on the Arabian Gulf; Abu Dhabi is the jewel in United Arab Emirates’ crown. The skyline of modern skyscrapers and futuristic shopping malls is complemented by ancient souks, chic hotels, luxurious spas, top-class golf courses, and a myriad of green spaces meriting its title of Garden City of the Gulf. Its rich cultural heritage combines Arabia’s Islamic traditions and maritime history with international influences. Turquoise waters and white beaches, mystical deserts, iconic landmarks, idyllic islands, fun theme parks, and so much more make Abu Dhabi a must-visit destination.

Weather

Abu Dhabi has a desert climate with year-round sunshine and little rainfall. November to April is considered the best time to visit, with daytime temperatures around 24°C. June to September can be extremely hot, with the temperature gauge often soaring to 40°C.

Unique experiences

Culture fans can witness Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque’s onion-top domes, reflective pools, iconic prayer hall, and the world’s biggest chandelier and carpet. Thrill seekers and families make a beeline to Yas Island’s Ferrari World Dubai and Yas Waterworld.

Culinary delights

Feast on Emirati fare infused with spices and Asian/Middle Eastern flavours: Al Harees, a slow-cooked dish of meat and wheat; Al Majboos, boiled meat with a distinctive blend of spices and dried limes; and Al Madrooba, a mix of salted fish, spices, and a thick sauce.

Natural wonders

Visit over 13,000 freely-roaming animals at Sir Bani Yas Island’s 10,000-acre wildlife reserve and Rub’ al Khali, the world’s largest uninterrupted sand desert. Go kayaking through Mangrove National Park and spot abundant pink flamingos at Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.
